Two years after the release of Mass Effect 2, and one year after I experienced it on the PS3, Mass Effect 3 makes the long-awaited series conclusion.
With expectations so high, can it possibly match the brilliance of the previous game?
In many ways, it continues on from what was experienced before, of course in storyline, and also in terms of its general gameplay. However, perhaps with a sense of urgency of the storyline, the game is more action-orientated, and though there is still the RPG and character conversation options that we have come to expect from a BioWare game, I felt the game was somewhat impersonal, in preference to just wanting to get the job done.
I played two experiences of the game. First was continuing the “save file” choices of my FemShep, the second was a new game of no previous history with a BroShep. To me, FemShep is the right way to experience this game, as I believe she makes for one of the greatest female heroes in video gaming history.
The story took about twenty-four gaming hours to complete, plus some online co-op activity which adds into the overall performance and experience of your game. Despite what is mostly heard around the internet, I was satisfied with the story ending I experienced. It made sense for the journey my character had taken, and especially seemed pre-destined by halfway though this final chapter. However, I can understand the frustration of some gamers that have spent many hours of “choices” to only be presented with “a lack of variation” in deciding the game’s conclusion.
The 4-player online co-op missions are great fun. I’m not usually one for online gaming, usually preferring the loner single-player experience, but I have poured as many hours into the co-op, gradually upgrading my character’s powers and weaponry. Now with the story over (or until future released DLC), online co-op is the place I’m happy to take my Mass Effect experiences. Being the humanitarian that I am, co-op is always my preference than player vs player, also.
Overall, Mass Effect 2 was the superior story experience, but Mass Effect 3 just may have more actual gaming re-playability, thanks to that online co-op.
